Lyon "Doc" Cooper Obituary

Lyon “Doc” Cooper, age 89 of Jeffersonville, Ohio, went home to be with our Lord and Savior on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at 4:00pm, surrounded by his loving family. He had been a patient at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He is the eldest child of James Dewey Cooper and Ethel Lyon Cooper. He was born on March 31, 1928 in Plutarch, Magoffin County, Kentucky.

Lyon “Doc” was a 1946 graduate of Madison Rural High School. He was a WWII veteran serving in the US Army as a Surgical Technologist while stationed in Tokyo, Japan. Following his military service, he attended Wilmington College, receiving his Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Chemistry and Biology and where he met and married his wife of 65 years, Ruth “Norine” Stockwell Cooper. He was a member of Sigma Zeta Fraternity. He did post graduate studies at Ohio State University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

From 1954-1969 Lyon and his family resided in Cincinnati, Ohio where he was employed as a chemist with Strietmann’s Biscuit Co. and as a researcher with Cambridge Tile Manufacturing Company.

In 1969 he moved his family to Louisville, Kentucky where he was employed as a VP of manufacturing at Kurfees Coating Paint Company.

In 1977 he purchased Anderson’s Paint and Wallcovering of Washington C. H., Ohio. He owned and operated the business with his son, Jeff Cooper until closing its doors in 2011. Lyon used his chemist talents to develop and sell his own brand of paint named Armor Hide which carried the Cooper Coat of Arms on its label.

Lyon took an active role in the communities in which he resided. He participated as a leader with the Boy Scouts of America, served as a member of the school board at Mariemont School Systems Mariemont, Ohio. He was given the honorary title as a Kentucky Colonel. He was a member of Jeffersonville United Methodist Church where he served as Trustee and Lay Leader on the Administrative Counsel. He was a board member of the Senior Citizen Center on Delaware St. in Washington C.H., the National Federation of Independent Business, and the National Republican Committee.

Lyon is preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law, Eric Krieger. He is survived by his loving wife Ruth Norine (Stockwell) Cooper whom he married August 17, 1952, children Deborah Cooper of Jeffersonville. Jeffrey (Leann) Cooper of Greenfield, Ohio, Kimberly Krieger of Freeport , Illinois, Cheryl (Jeff) Crabtree of Plain City, Ohio, and Nancy (Jamie) Ross of Hilliard, Ohio, grandchildren Justin Cooper, Courtney (Brian) Will, Blake Aaron (Katie) Crabtree, Mallory (Paul McGinty) Krieger, Blair (Kevin) Thomas, Jacob (Shaina) Krieger, great grandchildren Reese and Riley Thomas, Rose, Angus, and Arthur Crabtree, Lyon “the Cub” and Farrah Krieger, and Quinn Will.

He is, also survived by his sister Sarah (Robert) Miller of London, Ohio, as well as many loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be held Monday February 11, 2018, 11:00 am at the Jeffersonville United Methodist Church with Pastor Tom Knauff officiating. Burial will follow at the Fairview Cemetery in Jeffersonville, Ohio.

Friends and loved ones may call on Sunday 2-4 and 5-7 at the Jeffersonville United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jeffersonville United Methodist Church or to the military Honor Flight.
