Janet McCarty, 84, of Jeffersonville joined her husband of 67 years in Heaven on Wednesday, May 4, 2022 at The Trinity Community at Fairborn where she resided. She was born at home on August 14, 1937 to the late Albert and Florence Blanton in Paintsville, Kentucky. Janet graduated, in three years, from Oil Springs High School in 1954. She met the love of her life in college, at Morehead State University in Kentucky where she received her Masters in Education in 1958. Job openings brought them to Jeffersonville, Ohio. They began their careers during the fall of 1958 at Jeffersonville High School where she taught English and Reading. In 1962, her job took her to a new school district, Miami Trace Local Schools, at the new high school. She continued English and Reading, and she added to her resume by becoming the gym teacher. She returned to Jeffersonville Elementary from 1971-1987, then back to the high school to teach Advanced Senior English until her retirement in 1995.
Janet loved her community. She was elected as Mayor of Jeffersonville twice. She was actively involved in Jeffersonville Council and Water Board, an EMT with the Fayette County Life Squad for 15 years, and they were members of the Jeffersonville United Methodist Church.
Janet is preceded in death by her husband, Gordon and daughter, Yvonne Bock and her brothers, Kenneth Blanton, Burr Blanton, Bill Blanton, and Eddy Blanton.
Janet is survived by her sister, Blanch (Eddie Herald) Pelphrey of Paintsville; her son, David (April) McCarty of Washington Court House; her grandchildren; Tyler, Jacob, Pierce and Gabriella McCarty; Travis (Vicki) Huffman, and Heath (Jenna) Maxie; and her great-grandchildren, Haylee Wilson, Trenton Huffman, and Cooper Maxie; and niece Carla Williams of New Carlisle, Ohio and nephews, Rick Pelphrey of LaGrange, Kentucky and John Pelphrey of Paintsville, Kentucky.
Visitation will be at Morrow Funeral Home in Jeffersonville on Sunday, May 8, from 4-6pm. Funeral service on Monday, May 9 at 11am, at Morrow Funeral Home in Jeffersonville, with Pastor Tom Knauff officiating and a graveside service to follow at Fairview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the Mr. McCarty Scholarship Fund, payable to Miami Trace Local School District.
